The Common Culprits of Back Pain

Millions of Americans struggle with back pain—experts estimate that 80 percent of people will experience back pain in their lifetime. Back pain usually occurs because of a problem in the way your spinal joints, muscles, and discs fit and move together. Your back is divided into four areas: cervical, thoracic, lumbar, and sacral. The majority of back pain occurs in the lumbar region, or the lower back. Your lower back is composed of five vertebrae and supports most of your upper body weight. When any of the vertebrae or discs in your lower back are damaged, it manifests as lower back pain.

Back pain can arise from a variety of causes. However, some of the leading causes of back pain include:

  • Herniated or slipped discs. Usually caused by wear and tear, herniated or slipped discs occur when the soft tissue in the discs between your joints is damaged. This causes pain in your lower back because the damaged discs press on your nerves.
  • Degenerative disc disease. Degenerative disc disease occurs when the discs in between your spine’s vertebrae shrink or tear, which causes your bones to rub together.
  • Spinal stenosis. Spinal stenosis occurs when the spinal canal narrows, putting pressure on your spine and nerves. As a result, you may feel numbness in your legs and shoulders.
  • Cervical radiculopathy. Commonly referred to as a pinched nerve, cervical radiculopathy occurs when too much pressure is applied to a nerve by the surrounding tissues such as the bones, cartilage, or tendons. As a result, you may feel pain, tingling, or numbness in your back or down your legs.
  • Accidents and injuries. Bad falls, car accidents, and muscle strains can all cause back pain.

In addition, health and risk factors such as obesity, psychological stress, and inflammatory conditions are common culprits of back and neck pain.

When Should I Seek Medical Care for My Back Pain?

At the onset of back pain, you should try taking an over-the-counter pain reliever—such as aspirin or ibuprofen—and applying ice. If your pain persists for several weeks and is preventing you from doing normal activities, you should seek medical care. However, if you are experiencing any of the following symptoms, you should see a doctor sooner:

  • Pain, numbness, or tingling down one or both of your legs
  • Fever
  • Bowel problems
  • Unexplained weight loss

Sometimes, back pain can be a sign of a serious medical condition, such as cancer. If you are aware of any known risk factors, such as a family history of cancer, you should seek medical care at the onset of your pain.
