Wondering if You’re Suffering From a Spondylolisthesis?

Disc slippage, or spondylolisthesis, can be extremely painful and cause a variety of other symptoms. This condition occurs when one of the bones in the spine, known as the vertebrae, slips out of position and onto the bone below it. The vertebrae can slip either forward or backward, which alters the natural shape of the spine.

How Do We Diagnose a Spondylolisthesis?

Spondylolisthesis is a condition that can be caused by several different things, but the most common cause is overuse or damage to the spine. This condition is seen more often in athletes or people who do physical labor frequently because these activities put stress on the vertebrae, which can lead to fractures. These fractures weaken the bones and cause them to shift out of place, resulting in spondylolisthesis. Another cause of this condition is genetics. If you are born with thin vertebrae, you have an increased risk of developing spondylolisthesis.

Treatment Options for a Spondylolisthesis

There are a variety of treatments available for spondylolisthesis, depending on the severity of symptoms. In most cases, our doctors recommend beginning with conservative options such as medication, physiotherapy or wearing a back brace. Surgery is usually only recommended if other treatments have failed to relieve pain.
