Kite Surfer Hospitalized Following Strong Wind Impact Incident

Spine Injury

In a dramatic incident over the weekend at Shoebury Beach, Southend, a kite surfer was grievously injured after being caught by a strong gust of wind. The coastguard was summoned to the scene at approximately 12:54 pm on Saturday when the surfer was reportedly lifted about 12 feet into the air before crashing down and being dragged across the sand.

As emergency services rushed to the scene, the victim was found to be experiencing breathing difficulties. Two ambulance teams arrived promptly, delivering medical assistance on the beachfront. Concern arose for the individual’s wellbeing as the on-site coastguard personnel observed potential signs of a spinal injury, prompting immediate precautionary measures.

The kite surfer received attention for the suspected spinal damage and was swiftly transported to Southend Hospital to undergo further evaluation and treatment. Active in a training session nearby, the coastguard unit was quick to notice the accident and provide the first response, stressing the possibility of serious injury to the cervical spine.

A coastguard spokesperson recounted the harrowing events, noting the proactive actions of other kite surfers who signaled the distress to the coastguard officers. The officers were able to administer first aid and stabilize the patient in preparation for the arrival of the ambulance service. The medical team echoed the concerns of the coastguard and proceeded to move the surfer with utmost care, especially given the backdrop of spinal injury concerns.
