Damages to your cervical spine can cause pain in your shoulders and arms. If you are experiencing this kind of pain, you may benefit from a cervical epidural steroid injection. These injections are intended to provide relief from pain caused by inflammation in the cervical nerve roots. If you have tried conservative methods for your pain but aren’t seeing results, a cervical epidural steroid injection may be a viable option for treating your pain. Contact your local NJ Spine & Orthopedic branch to determine if this procedure is a viable option for treating your shoulder pain.
Sometimes, nerve roots in your neck can branch off the spinal cord and into the spine, causing them to become compressed or inflamed. The resulting inflammation can cause neurological side effects such as numbness or weakness that is referred to as cervical radiculopathy. When any of the following conditions arise in your cervical spine, they can cause cervical radiculopathy:
A cervical epidural steroid injection is a procedure where a steroid—usually cortisone—is injected directly into the area of your spine where the nerves are inflamed. This injection can help to reduce inflammation and the resulting pain.

Typically, a cervical epidural steroid injection takes around 15-30 minutes. Before the procedure begins, your doctor will apply an anesthetic to numb the area around the injection site. Then, your doctor will use fluoroscopy and a contrast dye to navigate the needle through your spinal canal to the affected nerve roots. Once the needle is in the affected area, your doctor will inject a steroid solution into the epidural space to treat the inflamed nerve roots. It is normally recommended to rest and avoid strenuous physical activity for a minimum of three days following the procedure.

Cervical epidural steroid injections are intended to provide short-term relief to allow you to start physical therapy. In most cases, patients will have the most success when their injection is followed by a physical therapy or exercise protocol aimed at strengthening the muscles that support the spine.
While most people who receive the injection will experience some relief, it is not guaranteed. The best way to determine whether this procedure is right for you is to consult a skilled spine doctor.
